Becoming a firefighter offers opportunities for advancement not available in other fields. However, it takes dedication and diligence. In “Thoughts From a Brilliant & Legendary Chief-of-Department” posted on the Merit Matters blog, former FDNY Chief Augustus Beekman said, “that any pressures applied by the Fire Department are designed to propel men forward rather than to hold them back.”

Reading Comprehension Necessary to Succeed as a Firefighter

Despite Judge Nicholas Garaufis’ ruling that reading comprehension is not required of firefighters in the Merit Matters article “On Having a ‘Positive Compliant Attitude,’” we could not disagree more. Firefighters most certainly need to learn and apply reading comprehension for their respective engine or ladder company operations so they can utilize them on the scene.

Firefighting Offers Opportunities to Advance Based on Merit

Becoming a firefighter is certainly challenging, but offers great opportunities for career and personal growth. In the Merit Matters entry “Former Chief-of-Department Augustus Beekman on The Merit System,” the former FDNY Fire Commissioner spoke proudly of being able to “advance on your merit”— which he obviously did. All firefighters should continually look to develop themselves not only for potential promotions, but also to become better firefighters.

Exam’s Standards Should Be Firefighter Appropriate

Published in The Village Voice, “FDNY’s Black Firefighter Problem” touches upon how decreasing the standards for the firefighters’ test is helping recruit more firefighters. However, it is not helping us recruit better firefighters who can capably perform their duties upon passing the exam. The test should be firefighter appropriate.
