A Letter From the President

Tuesday, February 25, 2014 posted by admin

As newly elected President of our United Civil Servants Association, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members who voted and put their faith in me to continue leading our organization forward with our motto of, “Equality for All, Special Interest for None.”Over the past few years, the UCSA has grown to nearly 300 members  and has also become the most diverse group, in keeping with the future direction of our department, it is something of which we are most proud. If we work together, there is strength in numbers and we can accomplish some truly positive things for the fire service all over but particularly here in Newark.

I hope during my tenure as president, I make you as proud of being a member as I am of having you as a member.

Yours in Brotherhood,

Alfonse Carlucci
United Civil Servants Association
Newark Fire Department Chapter

A Letter From The UCSA Team

UCSA Brothers,

As the Autumn of ’13 nears, I trust and hope that everyone had a healthy and fun summer. Since our last meeting in February, your association has been busy as usual.

During our winter meeting, we organized and then hosted our first annual, “Comedy Night”, which was an overwhelming success. Thank you to all our members who attended and worked hard selling tickets and making this a really successful event for us. We have sent both $500 checks to the scholarship recipients of the evening and look forward to organizing another scholarship during our next meeting in October.

Secondly, the benefit event which has become our most successful, “Blaze on the Beach”, once again was a great day! Bar “A” turned out to be a great venue for us and we are still looking for more feedback from the membership with opinions on Bar “A” vs. a return to Donovan’s Reef next year.  More than 220 attended this years Blaze and we had record numbers in Blaze shirt sales (over 70 dozen shirts sold!) and 50/50’s sold (560 tickets!). Thanks also to all those who attended and/or supported the event this year.

The UCSA also continues to support events such as Firefighters Union Golf Outing known as “Swings for Swings” which raises money to refurbish parks throughout the city and the Mayor’s NAACP Masquerade Ball. We also support the annual Fireman’s Picnic.

At our next meeting, scheduled for Thursday, October 17, 2013, we will open the floor for nominations for ALL elected positions on the board: President, 1st and 2nd Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.

In order to facilitate the vote, we are currently looking into system to allow us to conduct on-line voting through our website. We plan on bringing this up to the membership at the meeting. We urge all members to visit the website for our quarterly updates keeping you up to date on all our activity.

As always, it is extremely important to make every attempt to attend our meetings. Two or three meetings per year and the investment in a website keep all members informed.

Hope to see everyone at our meeting, Thursday, October 17, 2013 at 7:00pm at Kilkenny’s Ale House, corner of Central Ave and Halsey St, Newark.

E-mails will be sent as a reminder in early October. See you all then!

Danny J. Farrell, President
Al Carlucci, 1st Vice President
Anthony Tarantino, 2nd Vice President
Matt Marciniak, Secretary/ Tresurer

Letter from the President

Wednesday, April 10, 2013 posted by admin

We’re three full months into 2013 and it has been eventful to this point and there’s more to come!

Our first United Civil Servants Association meeting of the year was well attended and gave us the opportunity to relay some very important information.

In addition to dealing with issues on a state, and periodically, federal level concerning our profession, the U.C.S.A. remains active within the fire department and the community we serve.
For members who were unable to attend and as a reminder for those who did attend, the following items were discussed:
On Saturday, May 18, 2013, we will be holding what hopefully will be an annual event as a fundraiser for the U.C.S.A.  Our first annual, “Comedy Night” will be at Iberia’s Restaurant on Ferry St from 7pm-11pm. It will feature the comedy acts of two highly successful comedians, John Mulrooney and Vic Dibitetto. Tickets are $75 each and includes buffet dinner, beer, wine and sangria, dessert table and show. We are also including a “cocktail hour” complete open bar from 7pm-8pm with dinner and dessert served from 8pm-9pm followed by the comedy show. It should be a great night for not only our organization, but for our family and friends as well. Hope all members make an effort to attend.
This years “Blaze on the Beach” will be held in a new location since Hurricane Sandy claimed Donovan’s Reef along with the rest of its damage on the Jersey Shore. This years Blaze will be at Bar Anticipation (Bar A to most) on Friday, July 12, 2013 and starts at NOON with open bar on BBQ till 5:00. This is always one of the most anticipated fire department events of the year and this year should keep that streak going. 100% of the proceeds from the day go DIRECTLY to one of our brothers whose child is in need.T-shirts and 50/50s will be available by mid-April.
We also hope to support the Hispanic Firefighters Association’s “Casino Night” being held the on May 11, 2013 at the Hot Spot Diner in the Ironbound on Wright St and Avenue A.
Congratulations to our Director Fateen A. Ziyad on receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from Project Re-Direct for his work within the community!
The annual Newark Firefighters Federal Credit Union Dinner will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the Chandelier Restaurant in Belleville. Always a staple event of the Newark Fire Department and hope our members continue to support this event.
It is with great regret that this association announces the death of past Member, Brother and Friend Captain Jerry Inman.  On behalf of the USCA Board,  we offer our deepest condolences to Jerry’s family.
He will be greatly missed.
The Board of the U.C.S.A. proudly announces the winners of our Scholarship for their essays on an influential African-American during Black History Month.
Emily Gibbons on her thoughtful words on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr as well as several other prominent men and women in Black History, and Nikki L. Holcombe with her insightful views of Oprah Winfrey.
Congratulations to both young women on their excellent work and best of luck to them in their academic futures!
We hope to see our members at not only our Comedy Night but most any fire department function that we support.
Look for our next newsletter in June and our next meeting in September!
Yours in Brotherhood,
Danny J. Farrell, President, U.C.S.A.
